Author note: This is a massive alternate universe story that I've had bubbling away inside my brain for quite a while. The principle idea of the story was wondering what the world would be like if Voldemort had won while the Marauders were still at school. This fic is an exploration of that idea, continuing over many years in the HP universe. In total there are 12 parts to this story (still subject to change) but will be posted under the same title. It begins with James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew, Lily Evans and her friends on the night Voldemort gains control of the Wizarding World. The story follows them for about six parts before moving onto Harry and his own upbringing in this terrible world and his own struggle to defeat Voldemort. There will be major character deaths and at present the pairings won't coincide with canon due to circumstances in this story that make it impossible, however that could still change as I write.

Wednesday 16th November 1977

The light of the crescent moon was shielded by the clouds that had already gathered low on the horizon and were foreshadowing an early morning storm. It had been an ordinary sort of late fall day, inclement weather aside - a slight breeze brushed against the trees of the Forbidden Forest, rustling their branches and chilling the already cold early morning air.

In the middle of the Forbidden Forest, all was silent. No sounds of birds or animals or wind whispered through the trees. Utter stillness reverberated throughout except for the hundred or so figures walking, silently but confidently, beneath the forest's branches. All of them were dressed in flowing black robes; their hoods overshadowed their faces, masking their identities.

A tall menacing figure walked in front, his feet barely making a sound on the soft grass as he led them onward, closer and closer to the edge of the Forest. An aura of dark magic surrounded him, ensnaring the weak, the greedy and the easily led.

Lord Voldemort strode confidently towards Hogwarts, his lips drawn in a tight smile as his mind focused upon the magical shields that bound the school together. One by one his followers raised their wands combining their power to bring down the carefully constructed wards.

Spell by spell the wards shattered, the magic binding them together faltering and, with a last shuddering groan, failing altogether. Voldemort laughed mirthlessly as he stepped onto the grounds, confident that his victory was already within his grasp. Behind him strode his followers, secure in their ability to bring Albus Dumbledore to his knees.

"At last, after so long, Hogwarts will fall, and the world will crumble with it." Voldemort laughed as he strode forward, flinging open the gates of the ancient school with a burst of magic.

"It is time," said Dumbledore quietly. The normally bright twinkle in his eyes was gone as he glanced up and locked his gaze with a terrified-looking Minerva McGonagall. He drew in a deep breath, clasping his hands together as he finally began to speak. "Our world stands on the edge of darkness, and tonight it will fall further into the abyss. Tonight will be the beginning of the end. Hope may die, but others will always take their place. Minerva, what I am about to tell you, must be kept secret, until you believe the time is right to reveal it to those concerned. It could, perhaps, help win the war in the end."

She listened to his words, knowing, deep inside, that it would be the last time she ever heard his voice. As she listened she felt tears begin to slip slowly down her cheeks, knowing that this would be the last time that she would see her mentor - and dear friend - alive.

The time was 1:06am.

To be continued...

Note: As its a prologue it is rather short but I can promise all chapters from this point on will be much longer, probably by a few 1000 words. Please, please let me know what you think.
